Engaging educational board game designed for high school students and teachers to guide their dialogue about a sensitive, tabooed topic. The game manual helps the teachers to facilitate a safe and non-judgmental learning and discussion space. Through playing Pleasure Hunt, students can explore an extended framework based on WHO sex education guidelines. The board game works as a framework for different content targeting different age groups.
Issue
Current sex education practices often overlook important topics, lack inclusivity and fail to engage students effectively. The World Health Organization (WHO) created the Comprehensive Sex Education (CSE) framework in 2010 to guide educational institutions in broadening the scope of sex ed in general education, yet many institutions are unaware of or do not follow these guidelines—the absence of dynamic teaching methods and tailored content results in disinterest and limited understanding among students.
Idea
Pleasure Hunt adopts a multifaceted approach to address the challenges in sex education. Through a gamified board game format, it facilitates interactive learning experiences, covering various aspects of sexual health and relationships. Key features include:
Engaging Gamification ◡ By transforming complex topics into engaging game mechanics, Pleasure Hunt makes learning fun and memorable for participants.
Bold Visual Language ◡ The game features an engaging visual language using human body parts and vibrant colours so that youngsters can understand the interwovenness of the physical and psychological aspects of sexuality.
Comprehensive Content ◡ The game integrates the six main topics of sex education, based on the WHO's guidelines, ensuring a holistic learning experience for students
Inquiry
The research process employs Inclusive Design Methods from the social design lab of the Royal College of Art, the Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design (HHCD), including in-depth interviews with school teachers and headmasters, design provocation, co-creation workshops, and prototyping with pupils, to understand the needs and preferences of students and educators. Research conducted in secondary schools in Denmark and Hungary aims to understand diverse mindsets (liberal and conservative) about sex education within the EU. Through iterative testing and feedback sessions, the game mechanics and content were refined.
Introspection
My master’s thesis project at Designskolen Kolding brought passion for sex education into my life which defined my next couple of years in facilitating discussion workshops and events for adults. Although Pleasure Hunt has not been put into practice, with age-relevant content developed by sex educators, Pleasure Hunt could be introduced in schools or homes, facilitating discussions, breaking taboos and contributing to building a more informed and empowered generation, equipped with essential knowledge and skills for healthy relationships and sexual well-being.
